Event – The Human in Human Rights: Dignity, Autonomy and Democracy in the Age of AI

Friday, 16 October 2026 | Trinity Long Room Hub, Trinity College Dublin

EMILDAI is pleased to share an upcoming event from our partner, the Centre for Digital Ethics, exploring one of the most fundamental questions in the age of artificial intelligence: what are we ultimately trying to protect when we talk about human rights in an increasingly AI-mediated society?

The Human in Human Rights: Dignity, Autonomy and Democracy in the Age of AI will bring together perspectives from human rights, law, technology, regulation, academia and civil society to examine how AI is reshaping questions of human dignity, autonomy, agency, fundamental rights and democratic participation. The discussion will also consider the legal, regulatory and policy responses needed to ensure that technological development remains centred on human values.

The event will feature an opening address by Mary Robinson (Former President of Ireland and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights), moderated by Miriam O’Callaghan, with contributions from experts including Noeline Blackwell, Professor Dave Lewis, Paul Byrne, Professor Jennifer Edmond, Professor Edoardo Celeste of Dublin City University, and David Hickton. Professor Stuart Russell will also contribute by video.

The event reflects the shared interests of EMILDAI and the Centre for Digital Ethics in examining the intersection of law, technology, human rights and ethical governance. CDE’s collaboration with EMILDAI includes student research placements and collaborative projects exploring emerging questions in AI governance, digital harms and fundamental rights.
